John Schaffner was a forward observer for B-Battery, 589th Field Artillery Bn at the crossroads. Art Nordhoff's uncle was a Lieutenant Colonel with the 7th Armored Division at the Baraque de Fraiture. John Gatens was section chief and gunner of the no.1 piece of the 589th Field Artillery, one of the few guns that escaped from the ordeal of the Schnee Eifel. He was captured when the crossroads was taken by the Germans.
